Instructor Training

If you're passionate about infant water safety and want to make a difference in your community, consider joining the ISR team and striving for a world in which not one more child drowns.

Instructor Development

The ISR program for Student Instructor Development is a comprehensive educational experience. You'll work with a certified Master Instructor and follow a guided academic study of a broad range of topics related to teaching ISR:

  • Child development
  • Behavioral science
  • Anatomy and physiology

Your training will include a minimum of two hours per day, five days a week, for at least five weeks, in the water with a Master Instructor. Your academic study, also under the guidance of a Master Instructor, includes independent study for an additional five to ten hours per week.

From the moment you begin your ISR training, you are part of the ISR team. Our goal is to safely reach as many children as possible, and we count on dedicated instructors to take our mission into their communities. Beyond training, ISR offers a dedicated instructor website where you can review the most recent articles, ask questions of other instructors, enroll in self-study curriculums, and continue your professional development.

Your development does not end with initial training. Each year you will be required to complete a re-certification program. This helps to ensure that ISR continues to provide the highest quality training to every child.

Professional Opportunity

Being an ISR instructor is a professional opportunity as well as a community service. Instructor candidates must have a desire to support our mission--to prevent drowning and enrich the lives of children--as well as a willingness to manage your own business. An ISR instructor is an independent contractor who is certified to use the ISR technique.

When your training is complete, you will have:

  • The knowledge to teach ISR's self-rescue skills to babies and children
  • The certification to demonstrate your qualifications as an ISR instructor
  • The ability to work as much as or as little as you would like
  • National support systems, more than 250 instructors nationwide
  • Strong leadership team and Master Instructor Mentoring
  • Peer advisors
  • Business building coaches
  • Registration evaluation team and the support of an advertising review team
