Why teach a baby to swim?

"The circumstances surrounding death by drowning provides a jarring social commentary. The highest drowning fatality rate is for children under the age of one year." Edward Rubenstein M.D. Scientific American Medicine, Vol. 8, III, 1985.

Drowning for children under the age of four years is an epidemic in the United States. In Florida, Arizona, California, and Texas, drowning is the No.1 cause of accidental death for that age group; and nationally, it ranks second only to automobile accidents as the most prominent cause of accidental death. Eighty-six percent of these tiny victims drown while fully clothed; and usually... the parent "turned her back for just a second".. and the infant was gone. If you can watch your infant or child every second, then you need not further concern yourself with ISR lessons.

The ignorance and misconceptions about supervision and infant swimming are astounding. For instance, you may have read or heard that babies can swim "naturally." That is false. All swimming behaviors must be taught. If swimming was "natural" for a baby, why do so many drown each year? Consider this too, where you live is one concern, where you vacation is another. In Florida and California drowning is the most prominent cause of accidental death for children under the age of four years.

How long before my baby is "drown proofed":

No one is ever considered "drown-proofed" by any lessons and all swimming must be supervised by an adult.

Each student who enrolls in Infant Swimming Resource lessons is unique and will progress through the process of learning the aquatic survival skills at his or her own pace. A child's initial water experiences, health, teething, sleep, regularity, diet and a host of other factors determine rate of progress through the lessons. On average, we estimate that completion of the ISR skills training will require between four and six weeks of lessons. Infants under 12 months can be taught to roll to their back to float and breathe in approximately 4 weeks. Children, who are 12 months or older and learning the swim-float-swim technique, will require around 5-6 weeks of lessons. Again, no infant is ever "drown-proofed" by any lessons. Nor, is any person ever "drown-proof" and no one should ever swim alone.
