ISR Featured on Good Morning America

ABC - July 1, 2009 - Infant Swimming Resource would like to thank ABC and Good Morning America for the segment that was broadcast on Wednesday, July 1st, 2009. We would especially like to thank Summer Sanders and senior producer Brian O'Keefe, for their professionalism and willingness to address this topic in such a way that it will doubtlessly save little lives. It was very encouraging when Summer put on her suit and got in the water to see first-hand what an ISR student can do in the water both to rollback and float and to perform the swim-float-swim sequence while fully clothed. As a mother of two small children and being around water as much as their family is, Summer indicated how valuable these skills are. The entire crew including the underwater and surface camera man Blake Hottle and sound man Scott Osterman were an absolute pleasure to work with. We thought it might be of interest to you to see some of the "behind the scenes" pictures and some of the families and children who participated in the taping but were not shown in the final piece. We would like to thank them and the ISR Instructors who participated, Caroline Espy, Holly Nelson, Tracy Garlanger, Annette Goldman, Colleen Haas and Krista Raimondi who was in-water during the taping. We would like to thank Chelsea Bryan for sharing her Class I survival story about her son who, after only five lessons, saved himself from drowning in a hot tub. Thanks also to Debbie Smith for her continued support of ISR for 15 years. All five of her children are former ISR students and her twins are currently in ISR lessons. She graciously hosted the entire event and allowed us to utilize her home pool for the Good Morning America shoot. Finally this... we would like to thank ABC for including the ISR message of Constant Eyes On (CEO) supervision and the need for using a consistent bathing suit in color and type on a child while at the beach and other outside the home aquatic activities. These, along with other vital ISR safety recommendations, can be found on the ISR Aquatic Safety Checklist. Click HERE to read the full story.

Teaching your infant to survive in water

Tampa, FL - April 14, 2009 - Drowning is the number one killer of children under the age of 4 in Florida. With summer fast approaching, we want to show you another way to add a layer of protection between your infant and water. It only takes seconds for an infant to drown.

Doctor Harvey Barnett, who created the infant swimming resource method, agrees. "This isn't swimming; it's aquatic survival. To save yourself you simply have to go from face down to face up. So that is the distance between life and death in this scenario."

Specially trained instructors teach kids six-months-old to 12-months-old how to roll over and float on their backs. For a child who can walk, the instructors teach the kids to propel themselves through the water by swimming, and floating when needed.Click HERE to read the full story.

With practice, infants learn to float

Tulsa, OK - April 11, 2009 - On a recent afternoon, an 8-month-old student seemed more interested in sucking his own toes than swimming. But Gina Myers, Certified ISR Instructor, patiently, persistently, kept putting little Charlie Pellegrini back in the "float position" — legs out in front, head back and arms outstretched. This was Charlie's third week of daily lessons. And by the end of his 10-minute session — the limit for an infant's attention span — he was calmly floating on his back, with Myers barely supporting his head. After another week or two of classes, at $85 a week, Charlie should be able to float by himself as soon as he hits the water.

"We have a pool in our yard," says Charlie's mother, Molly Pellegrini. "No matter how many fences and locks and alarms you have, there's always a chance that you'll turn your back for a second and, somehow, he'll get in the water. So he needs to learn water safety." As summer approaches, water safety issue surfaces

Cape Coral, FL - April 3, 2009 - The heat is on in Cape Coral, and that means more people are taking to their pools. That also means residents need a refresher in water safety. Cristina and Michael Ryan are one of many in Cape Coral who are turning to Infant Swimming Resource, or ISR, to help their children learn how to survive after falling into a body of water.

“Since we live in Florida and we are around water every day, we wanted to have some peace of mind that they could survive if they got themselves into a dangerous situation,” Cristina Ryan said. “So far (our son) Brody has learned how to swim under water while holding his breath, how to roll onto his back to float, and to continue swimming once he has had a rest in his float. (Our son) Blake has learned to roll over into a float.” Click HERE to read the full story.

It's never too early to teach kids to swim

Honolulu, HI - Mar. 15, 2009 - Common sense would tell you that if you live on a tropical island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, learning to swim would be as important as learning to walk. And yet I have been told repeatedly that something like 60 percent of all children in Hawaii between the ages of one and 14 do not know how to swim. Oh, some of those kids may even surf, but if the leash to their bodyboard or surfboard breaks, they are going to be in big trouble. Click HERE to read the full story.

Swimming Lessons for Infants

Baton Rouge, LA - April 1, 2009 - Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children under the age of four. Some say lessons for infants and toddlers could save lives. NBC33's Lauren Unger hit the pool to find out more.

Three-year-old Avery loves the water, but her parents know it can also be dangerous. Recently, Avery’s 5-year-old sister fell into the family’s pool. Luckily she and little Avery have taken a class to know how to respond. Sharon Kyle explains, “She immediately came up, was able to float, get in a stable position, do the roll they taught her, and get to the edge of the pool.” Ronnie Kyle says, “It gives you a lot of comfort that at least you would have a chance to get there before they would go under.”

ISR master instructor Ilana Black says, “How to get to their back and float and maintain that float until help comes.” The pictures are startling, parents say for them, it’s big piece of mind. Instructor Kimberly Dawson says several of her former students have already put it to work. “At Christmas time I had a child fall in jacket, tennis shoes, freezing cold water, he flipped to his back, took a breath, than swam to the side. Parent Christian Heimann says, “The minute we get in the water with him, he’ll arch his back like he’s ready to float.” Click HERE to read the full story.

Toddlers Save Themselves from Drowning

Gainesville, GA - Mar. 30, 2009 - Every parent knows the cardinal rule: watch your kids. But every parent also knows, it only takes a moment of distraction. In that moment, what can your children do to save themselves? Roll over and float. Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) instructors say kids as young as six months old can learn self-rescue skills.

Kristine Croft is the aquatics manager at Frances Meadows: "You're always going to have the skeptics that say they're too young, they're too young. But this works." Porter's mom knows this works. Just a few weeks ago, the two-year-old fell into the pool while his dad was cleaning. His older brother (also in the ISR class) started yelling and pointing to his brother.

"We both turned around and he was floating. He was doing exactly what he was trained to do." These aren't exactly swim lessons, they are survival lessons. Tanya says she teaches the kids to respond in a specific way when they hit the water. "It's not what we tell them to do; it's what we show them, it's how we touch them. That way, they respond to being in the water the same way if they fall in." Click HERE to read the full story.

Water skill keeps Oklahoma City, Tulsa kids from harm

Oklahoma City, OK - Mar. 30, 2009 - A video of an infant falling face-down into a swimming pool and easily rolling onto his back convinced Brandi Ylla that her daughters, ages 1 and 3, needed to learn the technique. Ylla not only enrolled her girls in a class to learn the Infant Swimming Resource technique, but she also became a certified instructor.

Infants 6 to 12 months old learn to hold their breath under water, roll onto their backs and float. Children 1 to 6 years old learn to swim with their head down and eyes open, roll on their backs to float, rest and roll over again to swim to the side of the pool.

Ylla cautions there is no substitute for adult supervision. "We’re not saying we’re drown-proofing your child,” Ylla said. "But if my girls fell in, I’m going to find them outside the pool because they are going to be able to get themselves out.”Click HERE to read the full story.

Young kids in Hawaii learn life saving skills

Kai, HI - Feb. 17, 2009 - Drowning is the leading cause of death for young kids in the islands. But now, young children are learning skills that could save their lives. But now kids as young as six months old are learning the skills to save themselves. "At 6 months of age they are developmentally ready to roll over and float, and we can teach them to hold their breath under water open their eyes, rotate and float," said Jens Trumpa, instructor for Infant Swimming Resource.
During an intensive 4-6 week course, that takes place 5 days a week babies and children learn first how to float, then how to swim to safety. The kids learn the lessons in bathing suits, but eventually they'll also practice the same lessons fully dressed in regular clothes. "Most accidents of drowning occur when they are fully clothed so if it happens, they will be like 'ok I've done this before, I know what to do',"said Trumpa.

Turning Pain into Prevention

Great Falls, VA - Sept. 24, 2008 - There was great success at the second annual Birdie Invitational golf tournament, named for the 2-year-old son Brad and Amy Davis lost to a swimming-pool drowning a little more than two years ago. Amy and her husband started the Trevor "Birdie" Davis Water Safety Foundation to help prevent what had happened to their family from happening to others. In January of this year, the foundation began paying to have ISR instructors trained in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Three have been trained, and two are already teaching. "It’s more than a swim class. Way more," she said. Support for the Great Falls couple’s effort has been strong, particularly in the Great Falls community. More than a dozen Great Falls businesses helped to sponsor the tournament, which sold out again this year with 144 golfers.
