CrossFit® Kids Pledges to Provide Infant Swimming Resource Self-Rescue™ Survival Swimming Lessons to Families in Miami
Drowning prevention initiative eliminates economic barriers and helps prepare children for the unexpected
MIAMI, FL – CrossFit Kids (www.crossfitkids.com), a worldwide fitness program designed for children, announced today that they have teamed up with Infant Swimming Resource (ISR) to provide ISR’s Self-Rescue survival swimming lessons for children in Miami-Dade County. As part of an ongoing, county-wide drowning prevention initiative, CrossFit Kids and ISR are working together to teach children water-survival skills, safety and confidence that will help these children prepare for the unexpected, www.infantswim.com/crossfitkids.
Both ISR and CrossFit admire the work of military personnel and first responders and in recognition of the sacrifices they make, this drowning prevention initiative will provide free lessons for the families of those who protect us. Similarly, in accordance with ISR’s mission, Not One More Child Drowns and CrossFit Kids’ commitment to community service, this initiative will fully fund lessons for 150 families who would otherwise not be able to participate.
“Because drowning has no economic boundaries, we want every child to have access to this lifesaving program,” said Greg Glassman, CrossFit CEO. “All four of my children have successfully completed ISR’s Self-Rescue™ program, and I am a believer that a moment’s inattention does not have to cost a child his life. Through this initiative, CrossFit Kids and ISR will be teaching children to be survivors.”
"Many families do not realize the threat that drowning poses to their children. They don’t realize they won’t even hear a splash, and that a child can be properly trained to survive in the water alone," said Harvey Barnett, Ph.D., pediatric drowning prevention specialist and founder of Infant Swimming Resource. “When it comes to swimming lessons, everyone is in need - together we are preparing children for the unexpected.”
ISR and CrossFit Kids will be launching the program with an in-water demonstration and program presentation on April 11, 2011, hosted by Hurricane Aquatics, at the University of Miami Pool.

About ISR Self-Rescue Lessons
ISR’s proprietary Self-Rescue survival swimming program is a 4-6 week course, scheduled 5 days per week, Monday through Friday, for 10 minutes each day. With a focus on safe, customized, one-on-one lessons by certified Instructors, ISR’s survival swimming lessons emphasize health, ongoing program evaluations and parent education to deliver the most effective and safest results in the industry.
Lessons for 12-16 month- old children focus on teaching the child to roll onto their back to float, rest and breathe, and to be able to maintain this life-saving position until help arrives.
Lessons for children 1-6 years old focus on teaching the swim-float-swim survival sequence. Children learn to swim with their head down; roll onto their back to float, rest, and breathe; and roll back over to resume swimming until they reach the side of the pool, where they can either crawl out or wait until they can be rescued.
